What is WOWI?
WOWI is a network of women windsurfers based in Ireland. It was established by Charlotte & Anna in September 1999 with the aim of raising the profile and level of women’’s windsurfing in Ireland. It was also formed with the idea of introducing windsurfers to each other on a sporting and social level so that together we can meet and share all the excitement and challenges of this exhilarating sport.
And no, we WOWIs have nothing against men - in fact, some of our best friends etc etc. We just want to get more girls on the water whatever way we can. The more, the merrier, so the guys are more than welcome along too!!
How do I join WOWI?
Join the egroup, find out when people are going out windsurfing and just turn up!
Is there a subscription fee?
No!
Does WOWI offer lessons?
No, not directly. Check out some of the centres on our useful info page. We do however organise several coaching trips to different locations each year where instruction and equipment are available. See the calendar for details of upcoming trips and contact the organiser if you”d like to get involved.
How many people are in WOWI?
There are about 140 members that have registered with our egroup to date. Get onto the egroup to find out which WOWI’’s sail in your local spots!
Do you need to be able to windsurf to join in on a WOWI trip?
Not at all! We always make sure that there is equipment and tutition available wherever we go!
Am I too young or old to get involved?
Never! All age groups are welcome - if you are under 18 please be advised that some evening activities may not be available
Does WOWI belong to the IWA (Irish Windsurfing Association)?
No. While WOWI supports the IWA development strategy and have benefited very much from their support, we are still very much a separate organisation.
Does WOWI have a committee?
No, WOWI works on a project basis - people volunteer to organise something at the start of the year and it is put into the calendar - this ensures that everybody gets a chance!
I would be interested in organising an event for WOWI. Can I?
Absolutely! All members are welcome to organise events or activities whenever they please …just make sure to let everyone know!
